Solaz looks long at Kendra smiling mildly at her.
"My Lady Sarenrae spreads light through honesty, and redemption which brings the light of truth into dark places. Ustalav is Pharasma's domaine and my Lady has no qualms on that. She considers the Grey Lady an ally and honours the work she does.
No light can be seen without an eye to see it. My job is to open eyes to the joys of everyday life-work, leisure and the joys of song. Saenrae requires me to cause light to be seen where it can be. What light i can bring here is joyous only so long as i can continue to open eyes. Such work requires steadiness. I expect that is what the Professor spoke of.
I do miss him."

Fin thanks Kendra for the re-fill as he picks up the glass and brings it to his lips. After a short drink, he takes a cake.
Time has passed quickly. Fin is not accustomed to this kind of social company but the wine certainly has made it easier.
Speaking suddenly and with careful meter, "Perhaps a toast, to our wonderful host. I too, bring a song. Drink up! til your wine is gone." Fin's voice suggests that the bit at the bottom of the bottle wasn't exactly needed.
Fin raises his glass and takes a drink, before starting in to the cake dished up before him.

Kendra smiles with what Solaz has to say about her father, though her eyes turn more shiny - obviously, the thought has brought tears to her eyes. They do not spill, though, and she nods to the gnome. "That must be it. He always said we should try to smile more when we do the things we love," she said. "And-"
BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.
The front door shivers with the force of the knocking. It is late and dark. Kendra rises and looks out of the window. "It is very late for vis-"
BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.
The force of impact is repeated. The entry hall is attached to the front room, and even from the kitchen you can hear the wood groaning with the powerful smacks upon it.

Calaera smiles, unembarassed, and sends a warm glance toward her companion. "You are right that we are more than friends. We enter a realm in which there are few words. But beyond our personal relationship stands my oath."
She seems to feel that some further explanation is needed, and her posture changes to take in the whole of the table. "I stand to the oath of the dragon, as the cavaliers of old. I am sworn to my companion, so that her life is worth more than my own, whether she likes it or not." She grins with the latter statement. "But I suppose I stretch the oath to apply to my companions at need, and perhaps even to this whole town. It is such an insular place, and somehow afraid. I would rather no harm came to it, and if necessary--Still. It is unlikely to come to that, isn't it?"
[OOC=Didn't see the next page...]
The booming knock interrupts her words, and she is quick to turn out of the chair, scrambling toward the other room ahead of the others. She is hesitant to take up her sword, but she stops near it, and indicates for the rest of the group to stay behind her.
"Who is it?" she calls in a booming voice. "Who comes here?"

Calaera reaches the entrance hall first. The window at the top of the door is dark, as is the sky behind it. A couple stars that should be present are obscured, suggesting the head is at the height of the door - or otherwords, whoever is there, is as tall as a human. There is no answer to her challenge, nor is there moonlight to illuminate the figure on the other side of the door.
The porch groans, the head waves, stars appearing and vanishing as the head moves. A palm presses on the window, and pushes down. The door shivers, before the palm lifts away. And then the door positively leaps on its hinges with the impact.
BOOM.
Everything goes quiet. The door stays still again for a handful of heartbeats. And then...
BOOM.

"Damn it." Calaera curses low, then goes for her sword. "Stay behind me, all of you. Kendra, go back to the kitchen." Her orders are terse and her eyes don't leave the door.
[Ready action to challenge and attack only if attacked first.]

Navene rises from the table, her hand going to her hip where her ceremonial - yet still useful - dagger is strapped. She readies herself in case there is a scuffle, offering up a quick prayer to Pharasma for guidance.
(OOC: Stands (move action) and readies an action (standard) to cast true strike should Calaera be attacked.)

Chouko retrieves her staff from the corner in the kitchen where she had left it, beside the broom. Quietly, she opens the nearest available window and lets herself out into the darkness. It would do no good to follow the others; quarters would be too close if it came to blows. Instead, she keeps to the deeper shadows of the house and moves toward the front door to observe their persistent visitor.

Fin is alarmed by the sound. He sits straight in his chair quickly, stands up and goes to the rack where his coat hangs. He quickly places it on, and stands with a slight wobble waiting to see what happens next.
His short blade and bombs strapped and inserted in to the various pockets and storage areas inside, but Fin does not reach for a weapon quite yet.

Chouko slides out of a window. Her feet press into cold grass and she slides around the side of the house. Approaching the porch, she can see the figure, faintly, in the unlit night. Human-sized, with a head that is curiously tilted back and to the side. The head is elongated, strangely, the chin seeming to dangle down past the beginning of the chest. The chill of the spring evening seems to grasp the breath of the man (and based on the stature, it is either a Varisian man or a woman of Ulfen descent), crystalizing it and whisking it away, but the breath pours slowly and steadily from where his mouth should be. Instead, various parts of his body seem to be exhaling, the caught air turning into the little bits of frost that fall away and vanish as they disperse. She can watch as the hands raise and slam down, and with an almighty crack! the front door gives way. Forward, the creature lumbers, the cold late-winter's night spilling in before him. He is dressed in fine attire, robes that obscure his body and are pinned to his side. His right hand has ink stains on the palm and fingertips, as they reach out forward. His body is stiff, and as he moves, he shuffles slowly. The eyes are lifeless; the right one bulges from the socket, which makes sense, because the lower part of the face has been smashed in, the jaw shattered, hanging gruesomely from the bottom of the mouth, bone exposed, teeth missing, tongue laying to the side, twisted and swollen. Otherwise, the body of Petros Lorrimor is quite well preserved, and indeed, recognizable. The Professor has come home. Chouko represses a shiver at the sight of the Professor. She had grown up hearing tales of hungry ghosts, but she had never expected to encounter one, let alone one that was so recently a dear friend. No, not a friend. Her friend expired at the same time as the natural life of Professor Lorrimor, and whatever this hideous creature was, there was none of her friend in it.
Using her quaterstaff to give her height, Chouko vaults herself up over the fence and draws the weapon up to strike as she begins her descent. With a fierce cry, Chouko brings the staff down to strike.
DM Note: Forum error. Chouko rolled an 18 and did 3 damage.[rand=713375568729848123259712669000554099513715354211616249701973940117]

Chouko slides up over the fence and moves to strike with her quarterstaff, calling out loudly. The staff's blunt end smacks into the back of the undead creature once known to all of you. The creature does not notice.

Fin is shocked at the sight in the doorway as he looks on from the dining area. He is confused and startled at the sight of the professor.
Fin moves quickly running in to the other room where Solaz and Kendra are being sheltered.
"Solaz, come. A monster is at the door." yells Fin as he enters the kitchen.
Realizing how traumatic this sight might be for Kendra, Fin looks at her with a serious stare. "You need to stay in here. Don't come out. Don't open the door."
Fin turns and prepares to follow Solaz out the door to help the others. His hand slides inside his jacket, clearly grasping something, but he does not draw anything out, yet.

Fin moves through the main hall as the undead abomination at the door slowly turns, sensing life behind it. The bulging eye and shattered face turn to Chouko, and his hands raise up, slamming down heavily towards her. Heavily, his fist lands on the monk's shoulder, and a snap can be heard as something inside her body breaks. Chouko takes 10 damage.23 - Chouko 17 - Fin 17 - Zombie Lorrimor 14 - Solaz11 - Navene 10 - Calaera Attachments:
